Job Summary
The Signals and Communications Apprentice (S&C) is responsible for installing, repairing, testing, and maintaining various signals and communications systems and apparatuses, including railway signaling systems, wayside information systems, and highway grade crossing protection systems.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Must be available for shift work, including weekends and nights
- Work is performed outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions and on uneven terrain and surfaces
- Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise, and vibrations
- Must meet medical fitness for duty requirements
- Ability to grasp and work at heights and elevations
- Able to perform repetitive physical activities
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 85 pounds occasionally
- Must be available to work away from home in isolated locations
Pre-Qualifications & Requirements
- Grade 12 Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
- Valid Driver’s License
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Knowledge of signals or Rail Operating Rules
- Basic computer knowledge

Application Process
Here’s what to expect once you have completed your online application for a Signals & Communications Apprentice role at CN:
- You will receive an automated email confirming your application.
- Our team will communicate a decision within 2 to 3 weeks via email or phone.
- If selected, you will be invited to attend an information session and interview for the role.
- Selected candidates will be asked to complete a medical assessment, including drug, hearing, and vision.
- Upon successfully passing medical assessments, candidates will be required to pass a criminal background check.
- Offer is made upon successful background clearance.
The selection process for the S&C Apprentice role can typically take up to four to six weeks between the time candidates are invited for their information session to receiving the final results of their application.
Paid Training
Successful candidates will receive paid training and will spend one year as S&C Apprentices. The training is primarily on health and safety rules, standard codes of practice, installation methods, and equipment familiarization.
The S&C Apprentice paid training program is divided into the following:
- Canada: 3 weeks at CN Campus (Winnipeg, MB)
- United States: 4 weeks at CN Campus (Homewood, Ill)
- Electric Fundamentals Test (successful completion is required to maintain position)
- 4 x 2 week training block at home terminal (on-site with training team at the location you were hired for)
Successful completion of the training is mandatory to work as an S&C Apprentice at CN. Once qualified, the role is subject to promotion as a S&C Maintainer.
