Job Summary
The Labourer/Hostler is responsible for the day-to-day operations in the locomotive shops. The incumbent collaborates with a large team on day-to-day tasks to ensure the safety and success of CN’s operations.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Available to work shifts, weekends, holidays, nights and occasional overtime when necessary
- Partially performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions
- Regular exposure to heat, cold, water, noise, and hazardous materials including oil, grease, battery acid and fumes
- Protective clothing and equipment required
- Work at heights with fall restraint
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 85 pounds occasionally
- Bend, climb, balance, stoop, squat, kneel, and perform overhead work
- Hand-eye coordination
Pre-Qualifications & Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)
- Valid driver’s license
- Good verbal, reading comprehension, and writing skills
- Ability to determine the condition of objects and parts for wear and defects
- Vocational and technical training and/or knowledge of Rail Operating Rules

Application Process
Here’s what to expect once you have completed your online application for a Labourer/Hostler role at CN:

- If selected, you will be invited to attend an information session and interview for the role
- Selected candidates will be asked to complete a medical assessment, including drug, hearing, and vision
- Upon successfully passing medical assessments, candidates will be required to pass a criminal background check
- Offer is made upon successful background clearance
The selection process for the Labourer/Hostler role can typically take up to four to six weeks between the time candidates are invited for their information session to receiving a final decision on their application.
Paid Training
Successful candidates will take part in a paid training program to help ensure that they have received the adequate knowledge to operate in accordance with regulatory requirements and CN’s safety culture.
The Labourer/Hostler paid training program is divided into the following:
- 3 weeks at a CN Campus (classroom instructions at Winnipeg, MB or Homewood, Ill)
- 2 weeks at the local shop (on-site with training team at the location you were hired for)
- 2 to 3 additional weeks at the CN Campus
Completion of the classroom and on-the-job training is mandatory to continue employment as a Labourer/Hostler at CN.
