Job Summary
Heavy Duty Mechanics (HDM) perform major and minor repairs, overhauls and servicing on all types of locomotives.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Work shift work, which consists of: Irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime
- Work in a shop environment and outside in all weather conditions
- Occasionally work in confined spaces and at elevated heights
- Frequent stooping, lifting, kneeling, bending, crouching and climbing
- Travel may be required
- Good hand-eye coordination
- Frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds (22 kg)
Pre-Qualifications & Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)
- Diesel mechanic experience and/or Diesel mechanic diploma
- Valid driver’s license
- Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays
- Basic technical knowledge of diesel mechanics
- Must meet all medical fitness for duty requirements for the position

Application Process
Here’s what to expect once you have completed your online application for a Mechanic (HDM) role at CN:

- Our team will communicate a decision within 2 to 3 weeks via email or phone
- If selected, you will be invited to attend an information session and interview for the role
- Selected candidates will be asked to complete a medical assessment, including drug, hearing, and vision
- Upon successfully passing medical assessments, candidates will be required to pass a criminal background check
- Offer is made upon successful background clearance
The selection process for the Mechanic (HDM) role can typically up to four to six weeks between the time candidates are invited for their information session to receiving a final decision on their application.
Paid Training
Successful candidates will receive paid on-the-job training covering both theoretical and practical instructions. The training guides the new Heavy-Duty Mechanic (HDM) through the critical safety skills required to work on the railroad.
The Mechanic (HDM) paid training program is divided into the following:
- 3 weeks at a CN Campus (classroom instructions at Winnipeg, MB or Homewood, Ill)
- 2 weeks at the local shop (on-site with training team at the location you were hired for)
- 2 to 3 additional weeks at the CN Campus
Candidates may receive a four-year on-the-job apprenticeship program depending on their prior experience. Successful completion of this program is essential for performance of future duties as an HDM at CN.
