Job Summary
The Car Mechanic Apprentice inspects, maintains, builds, repairs and rebuilds railway freight cars and equipment in accordance with federal and company regulations.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Available to work shifts, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime when necessary
- Partially performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions
- Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, performing overhead work, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds (22 kg) and occasionally up to 85 pounds (39 kg)
- Frequent climbing or balancing, grasping, and good eye-hand coordination
- May be required to work away from their assigned terminal
Pre-Qualifications & Requirements
- High School Diploma, General Educational Development (GED) or equivalent
- Must meet all medical fitness for duty requirements for the position, including requirements for Safety
- Valid driver’s licence
- Familiarity with electrical and electronic tools and instruments
- Vocational and technical training and knowledge of Railroad Operating Rules
- Ability to determine the condition of objects and parts for wear and defects

Application Process
Here’s what to expect once you have completed your online application for a Mechanic (Car) role at CN:
- You will receive an automated email confirming your application.
- Our team will communicate a decision within 2 to 3 weeks via email or phone.
- If selected, you will be invited to attend an information session and interview for the role.
- Selected candidates will be asked to complete a medical assessment, including drug, hearing, and vision.
- Upon successfully passing medical assessments, candidates will be required to pass a criminal background check.
- Offer is made upon successful background clearance.
The selection process for the Mechanic (Car) role can typically up to four to six weeks between the time candidates are invited for their information session to receiving a final decision on their application.
Paid Training
Car Mechanics will take part in training that includes classroom instructions and field training during their first months of service. The training guides the new Car Mechanic through the critical safety skills required to work on the railroad. Successful completion of the training course is mandatory to work as a Car Mechanic at CN.
The Mechanic (Car) paid training program is divided into the following:
- 3 weeks at a CN Campus (classroom instructions at Winnipeg, MB or Homewood, Ill)
- 2 weeks at the local shop (on-site with training team at the location you were hired for)
- 2 to 3 additional weeks at the CN Campus
The newly hired Car Mechanic will be considered an Apprentice until they have graduated, which takes an average of three years – unless they have previous experience or formal training which has been accepted by the Organization.
