Job Summary


The incumbent performs various types of construction work, including carpentry, cabinet fabrication and concrete pouring. The incumbent may also perform tasks such as assembling modular workstations. The role responds to emergencies and may work with other construction trades, as needed. Additional duties may include carrying out carpentry work for several days or weeks without fabricating cabinets or pouring concrete.

Main Responsibilities

  • Build, install, maintain and repair structures
  • Read and interpret plans and drawings
  • Measure, calculate and cut material, among other things
  • Perform various intermittent duties such as installing flooring (e.g. carpet and vinyl tiles)
  • Pour concrete, do construction work with drywall, repair ceilings and raised flooring

Working Conditions


  • The role is performed in a combination of indoor and outdoor environments under various weather conditions
  • The role requires appropriate safety attire and personal protective equipment (e.g. safety glasses, safety boots, hard hat, reflective vest, respirator, hearing protection and harnesses)
  • The incumbent must be able to work at heights on occasion and handle loads over 44 lbs (20 kg)
  • The incumbent must have an adequate toolkit containing the tools necessary to perform the tasks
  • Respirator use is required for certain tasks, with periodic audiometric testing and respirator fit testing conducted as needed

Technical Skills/Knowledge


  • Ability to plan and perform all the activities related to fabrication and pouring of reinforced concrete for repair and maintenance of concrete structures
  • Capacity to understand and read detailed plans and sketches, prepare supply orders for various types of repair or maintenance work

  • Must have good hand-eye coordination, visual and auditory acuity
  • Must successfully pass a written exam on plan reading
