Job Summary
The incumbent works under the guidance of qualified personnel to develop the skills required to inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, overhaul, and service diesel-electric locomotives and related mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and air brake systems. The role supports safe and reliable railway operations by completing assigned work and participating in required training and practical learning in accordance with company standards, applicable laws and regulations, and established safe work procedures.
Main Responsibilities
- Assist qualified personnel with inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, servicing, and maintaining diesel-electric locomotives, locomotive components, and related mechanical equipment.
- Perform assigned scheduled, preventive, corrective, and on-request maintenance tasks, including repairs, adjustments, lubrication, servicing, and component replacement, within the incumbent's level of training and authorization.
- Develop practical knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems, electrical and electronic controls, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, driveline components, and related locomotive systems.
- Use hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, diagnostic equipment, welding equipment, lubrication equipment, and other repair tools safely and effectively, as trained and authorized.
- Identify, record, and report locomotive defects, safety concerns, repair progress, and equipment status to the appropriate qualified personnel in accordance with established procedures.
- Complete required classroom instruction, practical training, assessments, work assignments, and apprenticeship records, and apply feedback to progressively develop trade proficiency.
- Comply with company safety policies, railway operating rules, environmental requirements, applicable laws and regulations, and safe work procedures while working on or near locomotives, shop equipment, and railway infrastructure.
Working Conditions
- Ability to work varying shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime, as required to support continuous railway operations.
- Work is performed in shops, yards, and outdoor railway environments in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- The role regularly involves bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, climbing, balancing, reaching, overhead work, and lifting or carrying up to 50 lb (23 kg), with heavier lifting completed using assistance or appropriate equipment.
- The role may require working at heights, in confined or restricted spaces, around moving equipment, and near active railway operations.
- Good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and the ability to use tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery safely and effectively are required.
- The incumbent must comply with safe work procedures, personal protective equipment requirements, and all applicable safety rules and policies.
- Respiratory protection may be required for certain tasks. Medical surveillance, hearing tests, and respirator fit testing may be required in accordance with applicable regulations and company programs.
Requirements
Experience
- Mechanical, industrial, automotive, heavy-equipment, diesel, or related hands-on experience, training, or demonstrated aptitude.
Education/Certification/Designation
- High school diploma or recognized equivalent.
- Enrollment in, eligibility for, or willingness to complete a company-approved or government-recognized apprenticeship or technical training program in heavy-duty equipment, diesel mechanics, automotive service, truck and coach, industrial mechanics, or a related mechanical trade, as applicable to the location.
- Valid driver's license, where required for the position.

Technical Skills/Knowledge
- Basic mechanical knowledge and the ability to progressively develop knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems, electrical and electronic controls, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, and related locomotive components.
- Meet the minimum legal working-age requirements applicable to the location and the duties performed.
- Ability to learn to use hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, diagnostic equipment, welding equipment, lubrication equipment, and other repair equipment safely and effectively.
- Ability to follow instructions, apply technical learning, work collaboratively, and communicate information clearly in a safety-sensitive railway environment.
- Ability to maintain required apprenticeship records and successfully complete assigned training, evaluations, and qualification requirements within established timelines.
- Meet the medical fitness-for-duty requirements applicable to the role and location, including requirements for safety-sensitive work.
