Job Summary
The incumbent is responsible for creating designs and leading design projects assigned to consultants for bridges across CN's network in accordance with Company policies and American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association (AREMA) guidelines. The position is considered a Professional Engineer technical role and requires self-sufficient competencies in structural engineering principles and mastery of Company policies as well as Bridges and Structures (BandS) management procedures.
Main Responsibilities
Structures Design and Project Management
- Prepare preliminary and detailed design of railway bridge structures in concrete, prestress concrete, steel, and timber
- Work on projects that typically include steel plate girders, prestressed concrete, concrete box and steel pipe culverts as well as retaining walls
- Perform railroad bridge analysis, design and detailing based on the AREMA Manual of Railway Engineering and CN Bridge Design Guidelines
- Use CADD software, Microsoft Office Software, and structural analysis software to necessary to complete designs and design checks
- Delineate appropriate steps in the bridge design and detailing process
- Perform technical reviews of 3rd party initiatives impacting bridges and railway operations
- Coordinate consultant design assignments and in-house bridge design activities to support project delivery
- Resolve design-relate questions during construction and coordination technical responses with internal stakeholders and consultants
- Develop costing information, schedules, and technical inputs for bridge design projects
- Prepare and review of fabrication specifications, tender documents, and design standards documentation
- Provide engineering support and training to staff members and to field forces during construction
- Track outsourced service contracts, reviews and processes outsourced services invoicing
- Coordinate with CN departments to obtain approvals, work windows, and project inputs required to meet program objectives
Safety
- Verify that engineering drawings, specifications, and related design activities align with safety requirements and applicable standards
- Coordinate and conduct in field visits and document audits of bridge inspection and design-related reports
- Participate construction safety reviews and follow-up on design-related corrective actions as required
- Complete and maintain current certifications and training requirements related to Road Worker Safety, Fall Protection, Railway Operating Rules, and other Company safety programs
- Respond to critical incidents and events as required
Training and Development
- Participate in field visits to develop familiarity with the Network, site conditions, and bridge infrastructure inventory
- Maintain working knowledge of Bridge Management Plan policies, bridge design standards, and internal practices
- Continue developing technical, project coordination, and railway knowledge relevant to bridge design activities
- Assist with reviews of AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering technical content development and revisions
- Assist in development of Junior Design Engineer/Officers/ interns
- Maintain Railroad Bridge Engineer designation
- Ensure proper adherence to requirements for maintaining licensure as a Professional Engineer
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday and is eligible to participate in CN's hybrid work model. The role involves managing priorities and delivering work within established timelines, with support from the team to ensure sustainable and effective workload management. The role requires minimal travel (5%) and occasional work outside the normal working hours.
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of general engineering experience with a railway company, or engineering consulting firm
- Experience in structural engineering, preferably in bridge designs or rating
- Working knowledge of North American structural design codes, preferably AREMA Manual of Railway Engineering
- Candidates with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered
Education/Certification/Designation
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with emphasis on civil/structural engineering
- Hold professional engineering licensure
- Valid Driver's Licence
- Master's Degree in Engineering*
- Candidates with equivalent practical experience, education, or training will be considered

- Knowledge of technical and engineering aspects of Railroad Bridges properties, behaviours, deficiencies and inspection procedures
- Knowledge of Bridge Structural Engineering, Hydrology and Hydraulics, and Geotechnical Engineering
- Technical report writing skills
- General computer skills in MathCAD and Microsoft tools - Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Access and Project
- Experience using AutoCAD and related CAD applications to support design, drafting, and project documentation activities
- Proficiency with structural analysis software SAP2000, CSiBridge
